Newton Upper Falls
Historic mill village charm with easy access to Route 9 and I-95.
About Newton Upper Falls
Newton Upper Falls is a distinct pocket at Newton's southern tip, straddling the Charles River with a genuine mill-village history that still shapes its character. Elliot Street is the main road, winding down to the river where the old mill buildings (some converted to condos and offices) sit alongside cascading falls. The village has a self-contained quality — it's separated from the rest of Newton by geography and Route 9, which gives it an identity all its own. This is where Newton meets Needham and Wellesley, with quick access to I-95/Route 128 that makes it popular with commuters heading to the highway corridor. The housing stock includes some genuinely historic properties alongside more modest mid-century homes.
Property Character
Historic character mixed with practical mid-century housing. Some beautiful older homes along Elliot Street near the falls, including mill-era architecture you won't find anywhere else in Newton. Mixed in with more standard Capes and Colonials from the 1940s-60s. A handful of mill-conversion condos and lofts add variety. Lot sizes are moderate.
